Course setter´s note Kvarken Orienteering Festival starts with one of Ostrobothnia’s most beautiful terrains for orienteering, in the woods east of Kalapää lake. Last years Finnish relay championships for masters was held in the same terrain. The terrain consists of several bigger hills divided by some fields. The biggest elevation differance is about 20 meters. The terrain is quite fastpaced due to the many bedrock hills. The courses goes through the best parts of the terrain. Even if the terrain mostly consists of hills, there are clear paths for the youngest to follow. Map is made by Jussi Silvennoinen. Welcome to Kalapää! Stage 2, Friday 21/7 • Kolnebacken, Malax
Course setter´s note Kolnebacken has served Malax with gravel and water for a long time and now we orienteers are able to enjoy this treasure! As course setter, it’s a honour to be able to use a terrain and map like this. Kolnebacken will set your orienteering on prove. From very easy to very tricky in a heartbeat. The runability are mostly good, but green areas on the map are naturally slower. The keywords are precision and good change of tempo. There are many controls out in the forrest: check the code! Tommy Holmback Controller´s note The competition terrain is a gravel ridge, from where millions of cubic gravel has been transported. Left are small hills, narrow ridges, lakes and pits. This makes the terrain very demanding. The map in scale 1:7500 has a high standard, but due to the detailed terrain, it can be difficult to see what are up and what are down. So a magnifier is not a shame. The courses has everything a middle distance needs. In my opinion even an international standard. Childrens courses are made acording to the federations directions for children. Last said, this is new for the Orienteering Festival and Malax, no scrubby marshes and solid ground. Stage 3, Saturday 22/7 • Saarenpää, Vähäkyrö, Vaasa
Course setter´s note There are a big ditch in the competitions area and the crossing points has been marked on the map with a bridge and with a special crossing symbol. It is possible to cross the ditch elsewhere too! There goes a trafficed road in north-south direction in the middle part of the map. The orienteers will cross this road twice. Be careful when you are crossing! Forbidden areas has been marked on the competition map and some of the boundaries of these forbidden areas are marked with yellow-red ”Forbidden area” plastic tape in the terrain. Good luck with your orienteering! Kalevi Mäki-Maunus
